Avoid the crowds at this pristine, mile-long beach..
Overview
If you're down Westport way but don't feel like hassling with the masses at Horseneck Beach, take a jaunt west to mile-long Goosewing. Owned by the Nature Conservancy, Goosewing is a fairly narrow, pristine, sometimes pebbly beach offering relatively calm ocean waters. The beach's slope is gentle, and there's a good width of sand with that firm consistency that's optimal for walking.
Features
About a quarter mile down the beach there's a long, shallow finger of Quicksand Pond, worth checking out if you have small kids. The three-quarter-mile-long pond is often as warm as a bathtub. Follow a path along the edge of the Quicksand Pond, and you'll find a paradise for water birds. The local residents include egrets, kingfishers, herons, terns, plovers, ducks and lots of swans.
