FANTASTIC Food in Funky NEW Hot-Spot.
Note: This restaurant JUST OPENED on March 17, 2010, so the exisiting reviews on this website are not for Cook & Brown (they are likely for Oak, which used to be here).
I am very impressed with Cook & Brown. They did a complete overhaul of the old facility (Oak restaurant) and turned it into a hip, funky hot-spot with excellent food and service. There was a wait on their opening weekend! I ordered the Sole, which was baked and served on a bed of crab meat and clams with an herb sauce. It was so mouthwatering in smell and taste. My husband had homemade gnoochis with lamb, mushrooms, and leeks in a delicious broth. We were told the menu changes daily in order to provide the freshest meals. Both entrees were extremely flavorful, but not overpowering. Ingredients were fresh and menu items were creative.
We will definitely go back!
Our Neighborhood Restaurant. This was one of the first restaurants we visited when we moved to Providence (from Cambridge MA). The restaurant is right around the corner from our house and I find the atmosphere relaxed and child friendly. The menu changes but always seems to have a few comfort foods and some more elaborate items. My only bad experience was their Pad Thai noodles which I think was only on the menu for a limited time. The noodles were not Pad Thai noodles that you would find in a Thai restaurant: it was sort of a hybrid stir-fry mixture with an Asian flavor but little resemblance. I like that they experiment with different flavors, but be prepared for their interpretation.
good food, good atmosphere, not-so-friendly staff. We are new in town and had driven past Oak many times, and it looks so cute from the outside! We decided to try it and called to make a reservation and the person on the phone was rude when we asked about vegetarian options. It turns out they DO have many veggie options so we didn't know what the attitude was for. We went anyway and the waitstaff was not friendly, but not as rude as whomever was on the phone. The food was very good but overpriced for what it is. The desserts are WAY overpriced. The ambiance inside is actually very nice though, and we will probably go again to see if the staff was having an off night or if that is just their style, since besides the staff, we enjoyed the dinner. We sat at a window table and it was very nice.
