Newport >Aidan's of Newport
New Name -- The Fastnet Pub.
I've just moved to the area and so I've only known the place by the name "Fastnet", but it seems like the locals still refer to it as "Aidan's". I like that name better, but there must be some reason for the change.
I really like this place. They actually serve imperial pints (20oz.) for a decent price, so you sort of have to remember that as your taking them down. Otherwise, you can end up pretty tipsy. The place has a great Irish pub feel to it -- I hear Irish accents more than American in there. The bartenders are pretty quirky and cool. Sports are almost always on tv, but more often than not, Irish soccer or rugby, instead of American sports. They're happy to change the channel for you, though.
On Sunday afternoons, there normally some kind of live Irish music playing. This puts a bit of a damper on the situation if you're trying to watch a ball game.
Their food is okay at best. They don't have the best fish'n'chips in town. (In fact, I'm still looking for those.) Their burger is decent. The hot wings are okay -- I tend to like their buffalo chicken breast strips better. But it's all completely edible and filling pub food. You're not going to do backflips over it, but it will probably satisfy.
The only thing I really wasn't crazy about was the "atmosphere turnover" that occurred somewhere between 10 & 11pm on Friday & Saturday nights. All of a sudden, it went from cozy Irish pub to some weird dance club feel. They turned off all the sports and put on music videos. I don't know if this happens every weekend, but that was my signal to go.
Best Rhode Island Pub. Aidan's offers a great variety of pub food. On top of that, you can't beat the atmosphere of the pub. People from all walks of life kicking back enjoying a variety of imported pints (the real 20oz pints.) The outside seating is the perfect place to take in the summer weather.
