Ruined Mother's Day 2010 - Couldn't Pay Me to go Back!.
The worst service I've ever experienced in my life! We wanted to take 2 mothers and a mother-to-be out for Mother's Day breakfast in Newport so we decided on this place. We made a reservation since we were a party of 10 and we knew they got busy on weekends -- especially holidays. My girlfriend and I were the first to arrive -- the others were coming from Mass and hit a bit of traffic. The reservation was for 10am...at 10:05 the owner/manager came over to ask us when the rest of the party would arrive. We told her they were on their way and would be there in 5-10 minutes. She then proceeded to tell us they had "3 minutes to arrive" or she would give up our table and outright lied about having disclosed that we had a 10 minute “grace period” when she “personally” took the reservation. After 3 minutes, since the rest of the party still hadn't arrived, she came over for an update and told us we had "60 seconds." We tried to reason with her, told her that they were coming from out of state and that we made a reservation. We tried to get an explanation from her as to why we were being rushed and all she could say was "because other people are waiting" (mind you, there were only 5 people in line!). After the 60 second countdown, the owner/manager started to take our table apart – with no regard for our needs – and started to seat the other customers!. I had never been treated so poorly in my life. This place has no concept of customer service. She ruined Mother’s Day for the entire party. Think twice before eating here. Read the other reviews -- the food isn't that great, it's over priced, and the service is terrible! The owner/manager's actions were simply beyond reason – she displayed no common courtesy whatsoever and was rude from the very beginning.
Not too shabby.
I missed breakfast by 12 minutes so had to have lunch. I got the lobster salad which was good with balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing. (Doesn't come with the salad, that's my taste preference.) I really liked the thick rye bread(you get your choice of breads). It was soft, with a good crust. Loved it. I was going to get some chocolate muffins to go on my way out the door but someone beat me to it. Next time I'm going to try breakfast which I'm thinking will be darn good! I wasn't impressed with the espresso, however, it was rather weak for my taste. It didn't taste like espresso at all, more like weak coffee.
Despite the fact that the food was good, I was not impressed with the staff, who seemed very stressed and distracted. They did things like leave cleaner on neighboring tables for a long time, and the floor was absolutly filthy. It really needed to be swept up because crumbs, papers, napkins etc were everywhere. Someone could easily slip or be put off by the filth.
If you want food served to you by Paris Hilton, or someone who cannot speak english..
I have been to this restaurant a few times thinking it may improve. The food is decent, but the price is expensive. The service is run by a bunch of snobs with no customer service skills. Watch out...they may charge you $2-3 extra for no reason at all. I will never go back.
Simply outstanding breakfasts, with everything freshly prepared, substantial portions, great variety, very good service, and they're consistently good year after year. Lunches are also outstanding. Sandwiches are all made using your choice of excellent homemade breads. The coffees are also highly recommended; the flavored ones are NOT flavored artifically or with syrups, and the decafs are water decaffeinated. They have a big variety of outstanding homemade muffins, too. I enjoy a breakfast out even more than dinner out, and whether California, NY, FL or any other place i've been in my limited travels, IMHO this is the best breakfast place bar none.
