Editorial Review for Modern Diner – by Dawn Keable
The Scene
How many people have dined in an original Sterling Streamliner, a railway car manufactured in the late '30s and early '40s? Eating here might not be as exciting as it was when the car actually rolled down the tracks, but with the rounded ceiling, wooden booths and chrome detailing, you'll be entranced by your stationary surroundings.
The Food
Modern Diner serves lunch, but it's breakfast that locals stand in line for. Omelettes or eggs with hash are available on weekends for under $5. The breakfast menu also includes updates of old standards; the daily specials might include cranberry-almond pancakes or sinful cream cheese and blueberry-stuffed French toast. All aboard!

The food is delicious, creative, and there is so much choice. The usual breakfast suspects are there, but so are unusual and original combinations. The best grits I've ever had--creamy, rich, perfectly cooked and with a nice fresh corn taste. I had mine with lobster--although the lobster bits tasted good, in the end I found them unnecessary. The cheesy grits with a poached egg were enough on their own. The space is very, very cool, and the clientele is eclectic and lively, all of which makes for an exciting way to start the day. Service is quick, and there is parking, which is great in Providence! What was not so great: very crowded, there always seems to be a line; and the space, which is a bit on the cramped side, had a weird smell (not appetizing). Also, it would be nice to have better hot tea--the food is so thoughtful and well prepared, it just doesn't go with that tannic "Brisk" stuff.
