Not what it used to be.
We've been to the Modern Diner a handful of times, and always endure the long wait and mediocre service because the food was worth it. Today however, the food was terrible, and the service was even worse. There's a red-headed waitress who is as rude and nasty as they come. She was rude to almost everyone who was there. A busboy was walking around the restaurant aimlessly with a tooth-pick hanging out of his mouth- how disgusting! The potatos were both burnt and raw- I'm not sure how that's possible, but it was. We will never go back there.

Great food in cool space.
The food is delicious, creative, and there is so much choice. The usual breakfast suspects are there, but so are unusual and original combinations. The best grits I've ever had--creamy, rich, perfectly cooked and with a nice fresh corn taste. I had mine with lobster--although the lobster bits tasted good, in the end I found them unnecessary. The cheesy grits with a poached egg were enough on their own. The space is very, very cool, and the clientele is eclectic and lively, all of which makes for an exciting way to start the day. Service is quick, and there is parking, which is great in Providence! What was not so great: very crowded, there always seems to be a line; and the space, which is a bit on the cramped side, had a weird smell (not appetizing). Also, it would be nice to have better hot tea--the food is so thoughtful and well prepared, it just doesn't go with that tannic "Brisk" stuff.

nice retro decor, I love the old diners.
good specials although had long wait for breakfast, not many places to sit while waiting for table, a little over priced and cramped dining surroundings

came highly recomended, but i was disapointed with my filet at brunch, it was overcooked and leathery.
My good friend recommended this retro dining car to me for brunch but I must admit it was not what I thought it would be. It was crowded and service was slow. My steak was dry and I waited 45 minutes after placing the order. Pricing was high and service was below average. I will not return!!!!!!

THE BEST BREAKFAST.
This place is amazing! There are so many choices for breakfast, especially on the weekends. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable, and the service is great. Some of the breakfast specials are like desserts, they are so good!! There are a bunch of different kinds of benedict specials and they are all incredible, the hollandaise sauce is sooooo good. I would HIGHLY recommend this place!

Breakfast and lunch are the meals of the day at this cash-only, train-car diner..
The Scene
How many people have dined in an original Sterling Streamliner, a railway car manufactured in the late '30s and early '40s? Eating here might not be as exciting as it was when the car actually rolled down the tracks, but with the rounded ceiling, wooden booths and chrome detailing, you'll be entranced by your stationary surroundings.
The Food
Modern Diner serves lunch, but it's breakfast that locals stand in line for. Omelettes or eggs with hash are available on weekends for under $5. The breakfast menu also includes updates of old standards; the daily specials might include cranberry-almond pancakes or sinful cream cheese and blueberry-stuffed French toast. All aboard!
