Editorial Review for 3 Steeple Street – by Kristin Amico
The Scene
Rarely does one find a restaurant in Providence where the entire population--from university faculty to artist to city employees--could coexist so happily. Owners Julie and Bill Nahas have created just that, a quiet inner-city retreat with soft light from twinkling votive candles, exposed brick walls and giant mill windows that overlook the Riverwalk area. The bar opposite the dining room is brighter and more boisterous.
The Food
The menu caters to a wide range of palates without aiming for the lowest common denominator. Moist rosemary-grilled chicken is neither overpowered by spices nor glorified through presentation; instead, the entree, lightly dusted with its seasonings, attracts with a crispy skin. Some may think macaroni and cheese is kids' food, but this version, with a mix of sharp cheeses, is well-suited for adults. A colorful raspberry glaze on the roasted duckling adds pleasing sweetness; longtime favorites include the German sausage plate and salads served in wooden bowls.

I recently went back to 3 Steeple after years. I spent a lot of time there in college, I found myself in the city and thought I would go back to an old haunt. The Service was great, my waitress was fun and charming adding a great deal of fun to my experience. I had the Ahi Tuna, my partner had the flank steak, Both were excellant, fresh and yummy. The prices were reasonable and the menu varied. I will definately be going back more often.
Pros: Great Staff

Lunch might be the forte at 3 Steeple. The menu is inventive and has enough variety to please most people. The best thing here is the quiche. Not for purists, it is unusually tall and custardy (as opposed to the classic French version, which is thinner and drier). Quiche flavors change regularly, but the result is always satisfying, comforting, delicious and definitely filling (it comes with a tangy mixed-leaf salad on the side, which helps cut through the richness). The menu also offers big, hearty salads; well-made sandwiches; and more substantial options such as stews and grilled fare. The crabcakes are generous, moist and flaky, with a spicy kick and full of big crab chunks. The building is beautiful inside and out, and the atmosphere is cozy and pleasant. The bar is a nice area to hang out (good appetizer choices to go with the beer). I only went there for dinner once. The dinner fare (grilled meats and fish) was acceptable, but it didn't sparkle. The preparation, sauces and sides were run-of-the-mill and not quite worth the price (the rice tasted parboiled, for example). 3 Steeple is an outstanding place for lunch and happy hour, though not so much for dinner.
Pros: Stunning building, cozy atmosphere, tasty lunch food
