Editorial Review for Capriccio – by Simone Solondz
In Short
The luxurious, romantically lit dining room features worn cobblestone floors and exposed stone and brick walls that date back to 1877. But this celebrated downtown establishment is known for its extensive wine list as well as its landmark status. (Where else would you find a bottle of 1947 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild?) Chef Nino D'Urso prepares wonderful, solid meals--from pasta to seafood to steaks and even "designer" Kobe beef.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkGood bottles for less than $50 a pop are a hard to find, and the selection by the glass is run-of-the-mill at best. Spend the money.
ParkingSkip the valet parking and pull into any of the surrounding lots, all of which are free after 6pm.
Where to SitTwo cozy snugs (a.k.a. private rooms) adjoin the bar and are available for larger parties.
When to GoPiano bar fans can enjoy live music in the lounge from Tuesday through Saturday.
The ExtrasTwo fireplaces---one in the main dining room and the other in the smaller dining room--are lit in cooler weather. The large one is actually a redesign that was added mid 20th century.

Back in the mid 90's Capriccio's was a four-star restaurant, now it wouldn't be able to get a half a star. I took my finance there last week 7/17/08 for romantic dinner, we walked in and it was like a Sopprano convention. A party of 8 guys yelling, swearing no consideration to the other patrons. The Maitre'd /staff did nothing to stop that. We ordered our wine and dinner, the bottle of wine we selected was out of so we selected another year and that too was out of. We both had Steak Diana table side. Back in the 90's the tableside chef was enthusic and made your dinner with passion, now it seems as if we were a bother to him. The beef tenderlion was pounded to death as if it was a piece of top round. It then was smothered with dijon mustard(steak diana does not have dijon mustard in it). Several other guest wore shorts and flip flops well the waitstaff are in full black tux. The restaurant has not done anything to improve or change with the times since 1997 as I saw in the award they earned for "Best Restaurant of Rhode Island 1997" My memory of Capriccio's is only that a "memory". For a much better experince both in food and service I recommand going to Fedrel Hill district on Atwells' for 3times less the money than Capriccio's!!

I have only had wonderful experiences at Capriccio. My husband has Celiac's and is unable to have wheat and gluten. The waitstaff and Chef's bent over backwards to be sure that he had a superb meal to his liking. It not only had a beautiful presentation, it tasted wonderful (I made him give me a bite!). I look forward to our next experience! I can't thank them enough.
Pros: Ambience, food, drinks
Cons: price
