In Short – Original owners Jason and Beth Brown have relocated the eatery from its last reincarnation on Richmond Street, to a tidy casual spot, whose booth-lined dark interior evokes the feeling of a '70s family restaurant. With two dining rooms and a separate bar area, patrons find plenty of space to enjoy traditional Mexican and barbecue offerings that boasts eight varieties of quesadillas. Better yet, hot sauce addicts can rejoice with five in-house peasant sauces.

Very enjoyable mexican/american

by rockman48

I've been to the restaurant many times over the years dating back to it's location near the Hurricane barrier, Richmond Street, and even the Smithfield location as well as the Allens Ave. site (Old HoJo). It's been an odyssey with those longing for Richmond St, probably more enamored with the bar scene than the restaurant. Agree with some of the reviews on being a bit too pricey, but the food and service negative critiques don't ring true for me.

  • Pros: Mayan BBQ, Pork Burritos, Vegetable Fajitas, Salsa
  • Cons: bathrooms, price

Straight out of Kitchen Nightmares!

by s2001t

I thought that I had walked in on an episode of reality show Kitchen Nightmares, after visiting this place. My meal (some sort of chicken enchilada) was covered in two types of glistening bargain cheese, and the chicken was very dry, and tasted like it was frozen. The coffee I ordered with desert was so weak, it tasted like tainted water. My Key lime pie was overwhelmed with whipped cream. Throughout the meal, we also had 2-3 little friends buzzing around our food, drinks, and mouths (some sort of fly). If you are in the mood for Mexican, you'd be better off just picking up some Taco Bell, and a six pack, and enjoy the comfort of your own home. You won't be missing out on any significant ambiance, and throwing away your money on an indigestible meal.

  • Pros: The Bass Ale was fine
  • Cons: Everything else was dry, not fresh, low standards.

Waste of money & time!!!

by twingirlzmom

I used to be a huge fan of the cactus on Richmond St. as well as the one in Framingham MA...(mostly because my husband worked as a chef at them!), The service, atmosphere and quality of food USED to be outstanding. About a week ago however, I Re-visited the existing establishment due to the review i read from the new owner boasting the improvements.

We walkied into the front door and we knocked down by the overpowering odor that resembled a public restroom on the turnpike. Perhaps thats why there was only one other car in the parking lot. Next we were seated in an empty dining room, by a man who was sitting at the bar, not working behind it, dressed in more than plain street clothes. Still wanting to satisfy my craving for a watermelon margarita and chicken nachos we placed our order and asked for chips and salsa while we waited.(@ the old richmond st location this would have earned 5 stars already...an then some!!! The food & mixed drinks there were truly to die for! Thats why there was always a wait for a table!!!),

Shortly thereafter we were brought our drinks, which i will admit are good size(horrible tasting though!), and our chips & salsa. It didn't specify in the menu that we would be getting stale TOSTITOS and plain CHOPPED TOMATOES! I was horrified that a mexican restaurant would have the nerve to try and pull this off. Once the nachos came and we saw that these were also just a pile of tostitos and toppings including cheese that wasn't even melted throughout, we all shared a look of disbelief and pulled out our purses to leave money to cover the pitiful excuse for mexican food and our ice cubes and tequila. We left the entire meal practically untouched and walked out to go find a "chilis". At least a place like that can make a salsa with a little taste and a margarita with other ingredients besides tequila, and its not a ghostown!

My advice is to STAY AWAY!!!!

It is such a shame that who ever owned Richmond St didnt realize the JEM they had!!!!!!

  • Pros: Plenty of Parking
  • Cons: It's not the old Cactus from Richmond St.
