Great fresh tasting Thai.
I went to Pakarang with an out-of-town acquaintance who doesn't get Thai very often. Pakarang had been highly recommended by one of my co-workers so I was hoping for the best. I'm happy to report that they did not disappoint. We had Chicken & Basil, Shrimp pad thai, and coconut soup - all very fresh tasting and certainly some of the best I've had in the many cities I've lived. My companion was extremely pleased and indicated he is rather picky about Thai and this easily was some of the best he's had also. Service was pleasant and efficient with good menu recommendations and our water was kept filled, which I feel is a good hallmark of attentive service. Decor is a bit funky but not tacky - more of a urban loft feel with lots of exposed brick. Overall, two thumbs up!

Delicious Thai food served in a casually chic underwater sea cave..
The Scene
With black lacquer chairs and jazz music in the background, Pakarang is the last place you'd think of as a college hangout. No, these students don't swill beer, but are a rather more sophisticated breed of artist types. Dressed in trademark black, they blend in effortlessly with the rest of the urbane crowd who flock to this eatery. Even the fish in the aquarium seem cosmopolitan.
The Food
Unlike some Asian restaurants that disguise main ingredients under layers of fried crunchy stuff, everything here is instantly recognizable. Whether it be the smoky grilled shrimp satay, the chicken pineapple stir fry, or the pad Thai noodles, everything is fresh and light. And natural certainly does not imply bland. Try a bowl of the seafood coconut soup for a creamy blend of complex flavors.
