Editor's Tips

Save Time:
To get your hands on the rare books collections, you'll need to be accompanied by a librarian, so it would be worth your while to call ahead.
Know Before You Go:
Much of the collection has been transferred to the online catalog, but some of the older books can only be found in the archaic card catalogue on the ground floor.
Save Money:
To check out a book, you'll need to become a member: Special deals are available for first-timers and college students. Additionally, the Athenaeum has a deal with RISD that gives staff, faculty and undergrads access to research materials. Still intimidated by dues? Peruse the books for sale on the shelf near the entrance.
