Editorial Review for Chelo's Beef Hearth – by Dawn Keable
The Scene
If you're in the witness protection program, you might want to avoid Chelo's. The bright, open, booth-lined floor plan doesn't provide many hiding places. Even the massive stone fireplace in the center of the room has a window through it.
The Food
The Jim's Dandy that you order today (a broiled cheeseburger topped with lettuce and Thousand Island dressing, served with thick steak fries) is guaranteed to taste just like the one you sampled in 1984. Tuna salad, chicken salad and roast beef sandwiches are standards, and soups rotate daily. Culinary artistry is minimal here, but you won't leave hungry. Especially when all dinners, even the cracker-topped baked scrod, come with a big, crunchy garden salad. Don't miss a slice of Chelo's chocolate chip Willy Wonka cake.

I'll never go back to this local spot again. Just moved to the area and was excited to have a nearby possible 'fall-back' resturant to enjoy occasionally. We will sadly never go back. The service was ok. The waitress was nice but didn't bother to check on us after the food came. Another drink would have been nice! The food was way over priced for the quality. I had the chicken-pot pie. It came in its own tin which tells me it was definately not cooked onsite, just mildly reheated. yuck! If I'm eating at a resturant I would expect my food to be prepared in the same place, otherwise I would have went to the freezer section of the grocery store. It was so watery and tasteless that I didn't even bother to force it in, even though I was starving. My man had what was supposedly a steak of some sort. Not even midly edible. The cheese fries we had for an appetizer were ok but I could have made them myself at home. One more thing, there was a funky smell in the air when we walked in and it didn't quite leave my system until we left which made the meal even less desirable. We won't be going back but for some reason the parking lot is full when we drive past still. People! You don't have to eat there! There is better food elsewhere for a better price or at the least better taste!

THE WORST STEAK SANDWICHES I'VE EVER HAD. SOGGY BREAD, EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF FAT AND GRISTLE, OVER-COOKED AND THOSE GREASY ONION RINGS. THE PRICE? $11.00+. I WOULD RATHER HAVE GONE TO MC DONALDS. DO NOT EVEN MENTION CHELO'S IN A CONVERSATION WITH ME! THIS WOULD NOT BE THE SILVER SPRING LOCATION AS IT IS THE PAWTUCKET RESTAURANT ON NEWPORT AVENUE. STICK TO DESERTS ONLY!!!!!
