They use local ingredients, lots of interesting and fresh produce, and of course an amazing selection of cheeses and charcuterie. The menu changes often, so no one gets bored. The entrees are exquisite--the burger is tender, moist and flavorful, and comes with delicious polenta fries; fish and poultry are always well prepared in thoughtful and creative combinations. But the best thing here are the smaller plates, which are innovative and unafraid of strong-tasting ingredients (livers, cod, sardines, etc.) Desserts never disappoint, except for the fact that old favorites aren't always on the menu--the sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce, for example (please bring it back!). Wines by the glass are interesting and very good. Plus a selection of tasty, full-bodied beers.
Mmmmmm.... After over a year of putting it off, I finally went to La Laiterie (Farmstead) which is literally a 2 minute walk from where I live. I didn't go there in the past because they are always packed and don't take reservations for less than 6. This time my friends and I were ready to eat at 4:45pm so we got there when they opened at 5pm and were seated immediately. The atmosphere is cozy and warm and casually tasteful. I had heard great things about this place from neighbors and friends so my expectations were rather high. Lately, I've been avoiding dining in the square due to repeatedly bad experiences at Twist and Red Stripe. Let me be very very clear that La Laiterie is now, by far, one of my top 5 favorite restaurants in Providence. That's saying a lot because Providence and all of Rhode Island for that matter has wonderful restaurants of many types. Now about the meal. Everything...everything...was prepared absolutely perfectly. We were all very impressed. These people really put a lot of care into their food. I had a radicchio salad that was out of this world. We shared the macaroni and cheese which was amazing. As an entree I had the fisherman's stew which was flavorful, delicious and very well done. My friend had a sirloin steak that melted in my mouth. My other friend had a grilled cheese with ham, brie and polenta fries. For dessert I had the gingerbread bread pudding with eggnog ice cream...out of this world! Very rarely can I say that I feel I got my money's worth at a restaurant. The 3 of us had a bottle of nice wine, 4 appetizers, 3 entrees and 2 desserts. We spent, with tip, $75 each. It was worth every single penny. When I go out to eat I want my money's worth and they delievered. I can't count how many times I've spent at least $50-60 for medicore food, service and atmosphere. Not here...La Laiterie rocks!!!
