Do I know those Polar Bears???
by nataliegracem
I was born in Providence and now live almost 1,000 miles away--but when I return, I return to the zoo. This will always be a wonderful and nostalgic diversion for me. I have found charm and peace here for over 40 years. I remember leaning over the rails in the elephant house to catch a monkey's tail or looking out in awe at the "foreign" animals to our city. My fondest memories are those of iceskating on the pond, lunching in the Japanese Gardens, and most especially, the pony rides on Sundays. I am too big for those sweet ponies now, but I will never forget my childhood in Providence because I was lucky enough to spend some of it at the Roger Williams Park Zoo. Thanks to the scores of dedicated benefactors and caretakers who have preserved this park as one of RI's treasures and one of mine.
