A zoo, planetarium and hiking trails are just a few of the things visitors will find on these 430 acres..
Overview
Families hop aboard paddleboats, ride a carousel or find the perfect picnic spot. Walkers, runners and cyclists frequent the paved and dirt trails winding past gardens, woods and 10 separate lakes.
The Experience
Though there's plenty to do in this park, the 40-acre zoo is the main attraction. It's the third-oldest zoo in the country, with more than 950 animals and 160 different species. Snow leopards, moon bears and hundreds of other critters roam through habitats that simulate the animals' natural environments. Stroll on the Marco Polo trail and get a dose of zoology, history and culture in one neat package. The Museum of Natural History's vast collection features fossils, Native American artifacts and taxidermic wonders. Cormack Planetarium wows the starstruck with its celestial shows. Visitors should also drop in at the Betsey Williams cottage and the Charles H. Smith greenhouses while strolling through this large, lovely park.
Do I know those Polar Bears???. I was born in Providence and now live almost 1,000 miles away--but when I return, I return to the zoo. This will always be a wonderful and nostalgic diversion for me. I have found charm and peace here for over 40 years. I remember leaning over the rails in the elephant house to catch a monkey's tail or looking out in awe at the "foreign" animals to our city. My fondest memories are those of iceskating on the pond, lunching in the Japanese Gardens, and most especially, the pony rides on Sundays. I am too big for those sweet ponies now, but I will never forget my childhood in Providence because I was lucky enough to spend some of it at the Roger Williams Park Zoo. Thanks to the scores of dedicated benefactors and caretakers who have preserved this park as one of RI's treasures and one of mine.
