Yummy steak sauce!
by AmityLucas at Citysearch
They have some ridiculously good cognac cream sauce or something for the steak. I think it normally comes with the au poivre steak, but the waitress hooked me up with it for my regular filet. The truffle mac & cheese was amazing too. Overall a really good menu. Ate outside on a Friday night which was really nice.

Still looking for favorite restaurant of all time
by LBRJ at Citysearch
My Fiance and I went to Newport for the weekend. We found this restaurant online. We were seated right away. Although we sat next to the wait station the atmosphere was very nice. Our waitress was very nice and knowledgeable. The bathrooms however were oddly located in the coat room. Which I find very disappointing for a restaurant of this caliber. Our entrees were very good as were our appetizers. Our dessert and dessert wine was equality as delicious. Our bill was on the high side but we expected that going into it. Overall it was a good experience and we would return again.
- Pros: Very good meal all and all
- Cons: Coat Room/Bathroom
22 Bowens -- It is nothing impressive-- all talk no food
by jschlesi at Citysearch
Went there 1 month ago for a birthday. 2 meals were below average. 1 was outstanding. And another was not cooked as ordered. Appetizers were above average. 1 drink order was never delivered. At the end of meal I got the attention of the server. She apologized for not taking the improperly cooked pork of the bill. I was by now behind my group so I could not wait for the bill process to be repeated. The next day I followed up with a phone call to the MGR. After a pleasant conversation she offered to have to have the exec chef call me to discuss my experience. He also was very pleasant and offered to send me a complimentary meal voucher/coupon so I could come back and have a better dining experience. The voucher was never delivered. Don't waste your time dining here. They are all nice but do not really care.
BEWARE THE WINE PRICES
by mdanesi at Citysearch
Very appealing inside and outside. Seating was quick.(We were there at 2:30 pm for a late lunch.) Service was OK. But BEWARE THE WINE PRICES. We paid $12 for a nondescript glass of wine. We were not offered a wine list, so we expected the house wine - if that was it, I wouldn't want to see the others. The special that day was Beer-battered Fish & chips (cod.) It was very good.
- Cons: Wine prices
Fine waterfront dining in an unpretentious setting, enjoyed by the best-dressed set and khakis-clad tourists alike.

In Short
A prime waterfront location will lure you to Bowen's; sumptuous prime steaks and attentive service will ensure a return visit. While families gather in the two-level dining room, couples linger at the wave-shaped bar to try one of more than 250 wines available. In warm weather, patrons angle for a seat at the outdoor bar. House specialty entrees include herb-crusted salmon with French lentil salad and grilled filet mignon with Maytag blue cheese.
Pros: decor, outside bar cons: parking
by austinm at Citysearch
One of the very few upscale restaurants in Newport but be prepared to pay for the experience. Average steaks, below average seafood, and spotty service for an exorbitant price. With no valet or lot, finding parking here especially in the summer is a nightmare, if you do find a lot be prepared to pay $20 for the privilege. The walk in the winter from the parking lots in this cold seaside town can be brutal. The downstairs bar is oddly shaped and makes seating when full difficult at best. Very mixed crowd in regards to age and dress. Decor is better than most restaurants in Newport. On the plus side nice outside bar in the summer.
Nice setting but left disappointed

Went there on a crowded 4th of July weekend night. What a great setting, right on Bowen's Wharf with the windows open, all the people and the yachts. The only problem was the food. I ordered the $39.95 Twin Colorado lamb chops. Unfortunately they delivered four (4) ribs from a r*ck of lamb that was cut in half. You would think at a restaurant of this quality they would know the differance between r*ck of lamb and lamb chops. The quality and portion size was atrocious. I sent one of the chops(?) back as it was nothing but fat and gristle. The manager then asked how was my other one, which in one taste was half gone. My wife had the salmon which was grilled and slightly over done. Many sides are served a la carte and were surprisingly small in portion size from that which you usually find at a steakhouse.
From a winebar standpoint, the wine list is excellent with a surprising number of half bottles. The stemware is also very impressive. The service is sincere.
If the food wasn't so bad I would have liked the restaurant. We left disappointed.
- Pros: wine list, setting
- Cons: food
Great for Steak, less so for Seafood
by petrovna1 at Citysearch
This restaurant is best known for its outstanding steak and hamburgers. If that's what you have in mind, then you're not going to find a better place in Newport. However, if you're looking for seafood, there are far better places to go. Seafood is overpriced and clearly not the strong suite of the chefs. The restaurant is fairly large and frequently busy. I would not say it's the best for romantic ambience because only a few seats are located privately. Service is ok, but nothing out of the ordinary. Not quite as formal as the prices suggest.
One of the better restaurants in newport
by macandmac at Citysearch
We have been to this restaurant many times and always come away very happy. The steaks are always a good choice, we really like the seafood sampler, the lobster fritters to name a couple of things. Last night we had the filet and tuna. Both were excellent. Many times we are not a huge fan of the desserts, but the bread pudding we had last night was wonderful. Fridays, in the fall and winter, bowens has a special three course menu that is a good deal.
- Pros: food, service, atmosphere
- Cons: parking
